Thousands of Malaysian throng the causeways(Tambak Johor) everyday to work in Singapore. Very little are reported of their bitter sweet struggle to earn the Sing Dollar. This blog hopes to share my encounters with many fellow kaki tambak. Hopefully there will be more social recognition for these unsung heroes who breathes life to both cities on either side of the causeway.

Can ride bicycle from JB to Singapore meh? (Part 2)
Map of route from Bukit Chagar CIQ to Woodlands
Short explanation of the route used by kaki tambak on bicycles:
Park their car/motorcycles around Kim Teng Park and Jln Lumba Kuda Ride their bicycle across the causeway and pass through both Checkpoints Lock their bicycle at Woodlands Central Coming back to JB is the reverse of above process
Jiak Lat! A kaki tambak pushing his broken down motorbike uphill.
Reaching the 1st highest point.
The 2nd highest point which is the new CIQ itself.
The two highest point of this roller coaster route to the new CIQ are about 20 meters(5 storey high) above causeway.
After the forceful opening of Bukit Chagar CIQ, kaki tambaks have to ride uphill and downhill on the extra roller coaster route(mark in red). And on Friday night and Saturday afternoon, you will also see loads of kaki tambak walking from Woodlands Central to Bukit Chagar CIQ.

Can you walk across? I thought the new CIQ does not allow pedestrians, no?
But the logic is completely flawed. What differentiates a pedestrian and a motorcyclist who has to walk pushing his broken down motorbike?
Most of the time there will be two police officers(sometimes armed with M16) on standby at the old checkpoint. Their job is to check pedestrian ICs and force to walk back to Woodlands.
They classified Fri nights, Sat afternoon or holiday eves as special situation where they let them past.
Phew... what a hassle!
Glad that I am an EX kaki tambak!
Cheers.
KC,
Its a hassle and damn tiring as well. But riding a proper mountain/racing bicycle through the causeway can be loads of fun. Its very hard to explain but emotionally its very satisfying when one completes his/her journey.
I have a few questions! For instance, I stay at JB and need to work at Somerset (near Orchard)How long it takes if i ride bicycle from johore include all the kastam process until the nearest mrt station in average? Which MRT should i head for? Thanks
Anonymous,
Sorry for the late reply. I'll just give a breakdown from new JB CIQ(old one totally demolished already) to Woodlands, because I do not know where you live in JB.
1)Cycling into JB CIQ and passport scanning 5mins.
2)Cycling from JB CIQ to Woodlands Checkpoint 15mins.(For Woodlands Checkpoint to JB CIQ direction is 20min because of uphill cycling)
3)Passport clearance and baggage checking 10-15mins.
4)Cycling from Woodlands checkpoint to Woodlands Central and locking your bicycle 5 mins.
Total JB CIQ to Woodlands Central =40mins with no unforseen troubles.
Total Woodlands Central to JB CIQ =40mins with no unforseen troubles.
Most tambak cyclist will leave their motorbikes or company vehicles at Woodlands Central car park overnight and pick them up the next day.
So far I do not know any one who cycles from Woodlands checkpoint to Marsiling or Kranji MRT station.
Its likely to be around 15-20mins. You can lock ur bicycles at Woodlands station but I m not sure about Kranji.
Hope that the info is helpful.
